A few weeks ago I took a solo weekend trip up to Philadelphia, which lies just a little over 2.5 hours north of DC. I adore old East Coast cities, particularly those that maintain their charm, and Philly was no exception. The
city (what I saw of it, anyway) reminded me of New York City in its look and layout: old buildings with crumbly facades converted over the years into odd walk-up apartment configurations,
crammed storefronts, and restaurants with compressed rows of tables. The streets were narrow, laid down before cars were invented, and the
alleyways were even more cramped. In my experience, people usually have strong opinions about Philadelphia, and I'm firmly in the "love it" camp.
