Sky Meadows

My favorite way to spend a Saturday is to wake up early, brew a tumbler of coffee, and go hiking. It's been a few months since I've last done it, but with a recent free weekend on my calendar and warmer weather in the forecast, I drove to Sky Meadows State Park in Delaplane, Virginia for the morning.

Delaplane sits in the hills right before you reach the Blue Ridge mountains, and the park is surrounded by the most picturesque, rural meadows you can imagine. I picked two trails that connect: the first, a horse path through the fields; the second, a winding trail up Lost Mountain (a large hill). I passed fields full of cows and was overtaken by leaping deer, but it wasn't until the end of the trail that I saw other humans, all on horseback. This section of rural Virginia is the most idyllic I've seen, and I'm tempted to purchase an annual pass so I can return often.
