Norwegian Sky Cruise: Bahamas | Day 3

March 9, 2016

Day 3 of our cruise aboard the Norwegian Sky was spent in Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas. We visited Nassau on our first trip to the Bahamas several years ago so I was vaguely familiar with the city layout and atmosphere. We spent the first half of the day snorkeling at Rainbow Fish Reef before heading into the city center to walk around.

The water was particularly choppy that day so it took me a solid 15 minutes to trust my rented snorkel equipment enough to breathe through it, but once I got over that hurdle it was enjoyable. There weren't as many fish as could be hoped for, but there were many, many varieties swimming through the coral reef at the bottom, and the water was so clear that we could see everything down to the ocean floor. The fish must be used to visitors as they were not shy about swimming close to the snorkelers, and I accidentally kicked a few with my fins.

The city center is much as I remembered; many of the colonial-era government buildings still stand, intermixed with more recently constructed, pastel-colored shops. As Nassau is such a popular cruise ship destination the city center is largely geared towards tourists, but the buildings are still gorgeous and worth walking through.

The ship didn't leave the dock until the evening, so we came back aboard in the afternoon and spent a few hours on the back deck, enjoying the incredible sunset views before setting off again for the cruise line's private island the next (and final) day.
