October 20, 2018

Fall only arrived in D.C. a couple weeks ago, but we've already reached the end of many of the standard seasonal activities, including a local favorite: apple-picking. Virginia is seemingly teeming with fruit farms, so a friend and I chose one near Winchester at random and spent an afternoon picking at the remains. We each managed a full bucket through the help of a borrowed fruit picker to reach the tallest branches, as the lower ones had been thoroughly picked over by shorter and younger farm visitors earlier in the season. When we'd finished in the fields, we stopped in at the farm store for a variety of apple-related foods -- apple cider, apple dumplings, and apple cider doughnuts -- before driving back to D.C. in the stark light of golden hour.
