2018 Goals | Checking In

Every year I set a few goals for myself and then fail to really check in with them until the end of the year. This of course means they're not always completed by the time the new year rolls around. This year, however, I remembered to look at the list again in June and was pleasantly surprised to find that I had already accomplished quite a few of them, and others I hadn't yet touched, so I figured a check-in was due to reset myself for the second half of the year. I've bolded the ones that I'm either in the process of completing or have already completed, and added some explanations.
  • consciously live in the presence of God // I don't want to make this one sound like it's done and dusted, but I do feel like I've grown much more in this area over the last 6 months. I've switched to journaling prayer rather than just, well, "thinking" it (it's a hard thing to describe), and I've noticed a difference in how connected my prayer life feels.
  • settle into D.C. // This came together more quickly than I'd anticipated. I have a good grasp of NoVA and D.C. geography, I have a church and know a good number of people there, I have friends that I spend time with every week, and I have a workday routine.
  • be more mindful of my environmental impact // I use reusable bags every time I shop, I almost always ride public transportation and only use my car sporadically on weekends, and I've nearly exclusively bought all of my "new" clothing items from secondhand shops.
  • eat more meat-free meals // Since about 90% of the food I eat is cooked by me, this has been very easy to accomplish. I only eat meat a handful of times a week, if even that often; the vast majority of the time I'm functionally a vegetarian.
  • budget budget budget // This was going well, until it wasn't. I had a good budget down but then my employee benefits kicked in after my 90 day introductory period, and I didn't realise how much I was counting on using a whole paycheck until 5% of it started going into my 403b... so it's a work in progress.
  • save for international travel // See above answer as to why saving isn't going well.
  • finish Agatha Christie's Hercules Poirot series + start working through Terry Pratchett's Discworld series // I only have 13 Hercules Poirot books left, and I've read through book 5 of the Discworld series.
  • stop buying books until I read more of the books that I own // I've only read one book I already own since January, but I've only bought 5 or so, so I'm counting this as a success.
  • Dig deeper into the books I read, and stop reading books I'm not enjoying // This has not happened the way I originally planned.
  • be more conscious of sugar consumption // This is still a work in progress. I find it's easy to avoid sugar when it's not in the house, and I've gotten better at not buying pastries whenever I go out for coffee.
  • continue expanding writing portfolio + pitch several freelance pieces // This has largely not happened. Not only do I not write on this blog as much, but I've written only one or two pieces for an outside site since the beginning of the year.
  • finish Buffy the Vampire Slayer // I'm slowly but surely getting there... I'm now halfway through season six.
