2016 Rewind + 2017 Looking Ahead

The last two years began with exciting travel plans - in 2015 I was about to head off for a six month stint in Germany and in 2016 I was in LA - yet this year I have no plans. 2017 is a completely blank slate for me. Currently I'm a recent college graduate who hasn't yet gotten a job, so the year is completely up to whatever I choose to make of it, for better or for worse.

As for 2016, it was a busy one. I began the year in LA spending time with my family + grandparents + uncle as we celebrated my grandparents' 50th anniversary. A couple of months later my family and I went on our second trip to the Bahamas for spring break, this time surrounded by thousands of drunk college students and beautiful tropical fish. The rest of the year I stayed mostly within North Carolina's borders, visiting the coastline a few times and revisiting a childhood summer favourite. I saw many, many of my favourite artists over the summer and fall, including BeyoncĂ©, Grace Potter, and Ellie Goulding. In September I traveled down to Atlanta to experience the Music Midtown Festival again. I turned 22, found an incredible internship in my chosen field, and graduated from college. I started contributing more to writing projects outside of my personal blog and discovered communities of fantastic artists.

Because I graduated a semester early, I feel like I've gifted myself an extra six months to get started on living life as a real adult. Despite the utter uncertainty of the year ahead, I've made a few goals for myself that I can accomplish regardless of what I end up doing in whatever location I settle in. Last year I only accomplished about half of my yearlong goals, so I've put a few of them back on the list as well as adding new ones.

  • get a job // PRIORITY NUMBER ONE
  • be more mindful of my impact on the environment // easy things, like remembering to use my reusable/washable coffee mugs + reusable shopping bags
  • eat more meat-free meals
  • be a more ethical consumer // buy more from brands like Everlane and less from brands like H&M
  • put a portion of every paycheck into my savings
  • travel outside the country // i'm still holding out for a roadtrip to Canada
  • read all of Agatha Christie's Hercules Poirot and Miss Marple novels
  • expand writing portfolio by contributing to other blogs + magazines
  • learn how to make my favourite cocktails
  • practice my German fluency // i regained a lot of it whilst taking a class this semester and i'd hate to lose it again
  • actually finish watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer // this will be on every year's list until it happens
