2013 | August Favourites

TV show - Buffy the Vampire Slayer
I had intended all summer to start watching it, but it wasn't until the week before school started that I finally began the first season. The first episode wasn't too impressive but it had a lot of potential, so I kept watching and ended up finishing the first season within a few days. I'm now halfway through season 2 and completely hooked. My favourite character is either Cordelia because she's so ridiculous or Xander because he's like a teenage version of Friends' Chandler. It has a perfect balance of humour and horror, happy and sad moments, friendship and romance - my only real complaint is that the Master in the first season was kind of a weak villain, but the show was just getting its start so I can forgive that.

Movie - The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou
Along with Buffy, I spent the last week before school going through the Wes Anderson movies I hadn't seen yet, The Life Aquatic being my favourite of them. It had everything I love about Anderson's movies - center-focused cinematography, unique storyline, unusual characters, quirky dialogue, and Bill Murray.

Book - The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick
I can't remember if I read this in July or August but we'll pretend it was August because I didn't read much this past month. This is the book that Martin Scorsese's Hugo is adapted from, which is one of my top favourite movies of all time. The story is one of the best book-to-movies I've ever seen; the story was kept almost entirely intact and, even more impressive, the pictures were often the same. The majority of the book is made up of pictures that the author drew himself and many of these images look exactly the same in the movie. If you liked the movie, I highly suggest reading the book (and vice versa).

Artist/Album - "Halcyon Days" by Ellie Goulding
On August 27th, Ellie rereleased her Halcyon album with 10 additional songs, calling it Halcyon Days. Halcyon was released less than a year ago, but I love having all the extra songs already (is this what Rihanna fans feel like?). The new songs have the same sort of sound as the old ones, so if you liked her last release you'll love this one as well. My favourites are "Hearts Without Chains" and her cover of Alt-J's "Tessellate."

Song - "All You Never Say" by Birdy
This is the second song Birdy has released from her upcoming sophomore album, Fire Within. I've mentioned this song before so I won't go into detail, but I highly recommend checking out her music.

Event - moving out / college
I mentioned this in a separate post, so if you want to hear about it, you can find it here
