Annapolis, MD

June 9, 2018 | Annapolis, MD

I finally have some travel back in my life! I haven't traveled outside of the immediate D.C. area since February aside from a brief trip back to Raleigh, and I've missed the experience of going somewhere completely new. As I only had time for a day trip, I settled upon Maryland's capital city Annapolis, a mere 45-60 minutes away from D.C. depending on what side of the city you're starting on. I went with two friends -- the same two I went to Shenandoah National Park with in April -- and it was quite the breath of fresh air to get out of the city and spent a day in a small town by the Chesapeake shore.

Annapolis is quite small, and perfect for a day trip. We had a lazy start in the late morning leaving D.C. and made it in time for lunch, which we spent at the Iron Rooster (recommended by a friend). We spent the rest of the afternoon walking through the Naval Academy and back and forth through the downtown streets, stopping at bookstores and coffee shops and boutiques (Old Fox Books & Coffeehouse was my favorite).

After months of not leaving D.C. it was nice to go out a little further, where people are a little more friendly, prices are a little lower, and life feels a little more normal. As we left Annapolis and battled our way back home across New York Ave, we planned more weekend trips for later in the season, and I'm looking forward to more time out of the city after so long a stretch staying in.
